Google Business Profile: The Complete Optimisation Guide for SA Businesses
For a local business in South Africa, your Google Business Profile is often worth more than your website. It’s what appears in the map pack when someone searches "electrician near me" — and the map pack sits above everything else. Here’s how to set it up and optimise it properly.

Step 1: Claim and verify
Go to business.google.com and claim your profile. Google verifies South African businesses by video, phone, email or postcard. Until you’re verified, you control nothing — and anyone can suggest wrong edits to your listing.
Step 2: Get your categories exactly right
Your primary category is the single most important ranking factor in your profile. Choose the most specific accurate option — "Plumber", not "Home services". Then add every relevant secondary category; they widen the searches you appear for without diluting the primary. Check what your top-ranking competitors use and match anything genuinely applicable.
Step 3: Complete every section
Empty fields are missed relevance signals:
- Business description — 750 characters. Lead with what you do and where; write for humans, include your core keywords naturally.
- Services — list every service individually with descriptions. Each one is a relevance hook.
- Service areas — critical if you travel to customers: list Meyerton, Vereeniging, Johannesburg, wherever you genuinely work.
- Hours — including public holiday hours. South Africans check before driving; wrong hours cost you real foot traffic and earn bad reviews.
- Attributes — payment methods, accessibility, "identifies as women-owned" — complete everything relevant.
Step 4: Photos — more than you think
Profiles with quality photos get markedly more calls and direction requests. Upload your premises, team, completed work and before-and-afters. Geotagged, recent, real photos signal an active, legitimate business. Refresh monthly — a stale profile reads as a stale business.
Step 5: Reviews — your ranking engine
Reviews are a top-three local ranking factor and your biggest conversion asset. A practical South African review system:
- Ask at the moment of delight — right after successful delivery, not weeks later.
- Send your direct review link via WhatsApp — in South Africa, WhatsApp converts far better than email.
- Respond to every review — thoughtful replies to positives, calm and accountable replies to negatives. Response activity is itself a ranking signal.
- Never buy reviews or offer incentives — Google’s detection is good and getting better; a suspension will cost you far more.
Step 6: Posts, Q&A and products
- Posts — weekly updates, offers and news signal an active business.
- Q&A — seed your own common questions and answer them properly. If you don’t, the public will, and their answers may be wrong.
- Products and services with prices — South Africans value pricing transparency; listing prices filters in serious buyers.
Suspension pitfalls to avoid
Keyword-stuffing your business name ("Joe’s Plumbing Best Plumber Gauteng"), fake addresses, virtual offices, and review schemes are the fastest routes to suspension. Reinstatement can take weeks of lost visibility. Play it straight — the returns on honest optimisation compound.
