Website Cost in South Africa (2026): R1,000/pm Plans vs R8,000–R35,000 Custom Builds
Ask five South African web designers what a website costs and you will get five different answers — from R1,000 a month to R35,000 once-off. Both can be legitimate. Both can also be a waste of money. This guide breaks down what you actually get at each price point, who each tier suits, and the questions to ask before you sign anything.

A website is not a once-off purchase any more — it is an ongoing business asset that needs to be fast, secure, mobile-friendly and findable on Google. The price you pay depends on whether you want a managed monthly plan or a custom-built project, and on how much of the work you are willing to hand over. This guide covers both routes honestly, with real 2026 prices in rand.
One thing to settle upfront: cheap is not always bad, and expensive is not always good. A R1,000/pm plan can be exactly right for a sole trader who needs a clean, professional online presence. A R35,000 custom build can be exactly right for a business with complex booking logic, a product catalogue or a members area. The mistake is paying for the wrong tier — either overspending on features you will never use, or underspending and getting a site that cannot be found on Google.
The two routes: monthly plan or custom build
South African website pricing splits into two broad categories, and they work very differently.
A monthly subscription plan means you pay a fixed amount every month and the provider handles hosting, security updates, backups and basic maintenance. You do not own the site outright — if you stop paying, the site comes down — but you also never have to worry about a server going down at 2 am or a plugin breaking after an update. Plans typically include a template-based design that is set up once and then handed to you, or kept managed by the provider.
A custom build is a once-off project fee. You commission a designer or agency to build a site to your specification, and at the end you own the code and the design. You still need to pay for hosting separately (usually R200 to R800/pm depending on the server), and you are responsible for keeping it updated and secure — or you pay someone to do that for you on a maintenance retainer.
Neither route is universally better. The right choice depends on your budget, your technical comfort, and how much the site needs to do.

Monthly website plans: what R1,000 to R3,500/pm buys
Monthly plans have become the default for small South African businesses that want a professional site without the technical headache. Here is what the main tiers look like in 2026.
At R1,000 to R1,500/pm you typically get a five-to-eight page template site — home, about, services, contact, and maybe a blog. Hosting and SSL are included. The design is clean but not unique; you are working within a template framework. Updates to text and images are usually self-service through a simple editor, or you submit a request and the provider makes the change. This tier suits sole traders, freelancers and very small service businesses that need a credible online presence without complexity.
At R1,500 to R2,500/pm the scope expands. You might get a more customised design, a basic contact form with email notifications, Google Business Profile integration, and sometimes a starter SEO setup — meta titles, descriptions and a sitemap. Some providers at this tier include monthly content updates or a blog post. This suits small businesses that want their site to do a bit more work — capture leads, show up in local search, and look more tailored than a pure template.
At R2,500 to R3,500/pm you are usually getting a fully managed service: design, hosting, security, monthly updates, basic SEO maintenance and sometimes social media integration. The site is treated as a living asset rather than a set-and-forget page. This tier suits businesses that want to hand the whole thing over and focus on running their business.
Watch-out at every monthly plan tier: check what happens to your content and domain if you cancel. Some providers lock your domain or make it difficult to migrate. Ask specifically: "If I cancel, can I take my domain and my content with me?" A good provider will say yes.
Custom website builds: what R8,000 to R35,000 buys
Custom builds are priced by scope, not by time. The more pages, the more functionality, and the more bespoke the design, the higher the price. Here is how the tiers break down in the South African market in 2026.
At R8,000 to R15,000 you get a small custom site — typically five to fifteen pages, a bespoke design (not a template), a contact form, basic on-page SEO setup, and a content management system so you can update text and images yourself. This is the entry point for businesses that want something that looks genuinely theirs rather than a template, but do not need complex functionality. Turnaround is usually four to eight weeks.
At R15,000 to R25,000 the scope grows to include more pages, more complex design, integration with third-party tools (booking systems, payment gateways, CRM connections), and sometimes a basic e-commerce setup with up to fifty products. The design process is more involved — wireframes, revisions, a proper brief. Turnaround is typically six to twelve weeks.
At R25,000 to R35,000 you are commissioning a serious project: a large e-commerce store, a membership site, a booking platform, a multi-location business site with location-specific pages, or a site with custom functionality that does not exist off the shelf. The design is fully bespoke, the development is custom, and the project is managed with a proper brief, milestones and sign-off stages. Turnaround is typically ten to sixteen weeks.
Above R35,000 you are in enterprise territory — large-scale platforms, complex integrations, dedicated project teams. Most South African service businesses never need to go there.

What is not included — and what it costs extra
Whether you go monthly or custom, there are common extras that catch businesses by surprise. Being clear about these upfront saves arguments later.
Copywriting is almost never included at the base price. Writing the actual words on your site — the service descriptions, the about page, the homepage headline — is a separate skill from design and development. Budget R500 to R2,000 per page for professional copywriting, or plan to write it yourself. A site with weak copy will not convert visitors into customers no matter how good it looks.
Photography and video are separate. Stock images are free or cheap, but they look generic. Real photos of your team, your premises and your work convert better and help with Google E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness). A basic commercial photography session in Gauteng runs R3,000 to R8,000.
SEO is a separate ongoing service. A website launch includes basic on-page setup — meta titles, descriptions, a sitemap — but ranking on Google requires ongoing work: content, links, technical maintenance, Google Business Profile management. If you want your site to bring in leads from search, budget for SEO separately. Our SEO cost guide covers what that looks like in rand.
Ongoing maintenance on a custom build is a real cost. Security patches, plugin updates, backups and occasional fixes run R500 to R2,000/pm depending on the complexity of the site. If you do not budget for this, you will either do it yourself (which takes time and skill) or let it slide (which creates security risk and eventual breakage).
Monthly plan vs custom build: which is right for you?
Four questions help most businesses decide.
First: how much do you want to spend upfront? If cash flow is tight, a monthly plan spreads the cost and avoids a large once-off invoice. If you have the budget and want to own the asset, a custom build makes sense.
Second: how complex does the site need to be? A five-page service site with a contact form is well served by a monthly plan. A booking system, a product catalogue, a members area or custom integrations need a custom build.
Third: how important is a unique design? Monthly plans use templates — they can look very good, but they are not unique. If your brand requires a completely bespoke visual identity, a custom build is the right route.
Fourth: who will manage it? Monthly plans are managed for you. Custom builds require either your own technical attention or a maintenance retainer. Be honest about how much time and skill you have available.

Red flags to watch for
The South African web design market has its share of providers who overpromise and underdeliver. These are the warning signs worth knowing before you sign anything.
No written scope of work. If a provider cannot give you a document that lists exactly what is included — number of pages, functionality, revisions, timeline — you have no basis for a dispute when something is missing. Always get it in writing.
Guaranteed Google rankings included in the price. Web design and SEO are different disciplines. A designer who promises you will rank on page one as part of a R5,000 website package is either confused or misleading you. Basic on-page setup is reasonable to include; ranking guarantees are not.
No clarity on who owns the domain and content. Your domain name is a business asset. Make sure it is registered in your name, not the agency's. Ask specifically before you pay.
Very long lock-in contracts for monthly plans. A twelve-month minimum on a monthly plan is a red flag — it protects the provider, not you. Good providers are confident enough in their work to offer shorter commitments.
No portfolio or references. Any legitimate web designer has a portfolio of live sites you can visit and clients you can contact. If they cannot show you real work, do not hire them.
What BurnesSEO offers
We are an SEO and digital marketing studio, not a pure web design agency — but websites are part of what we do, because a site that cannot be found on Google is not doing its job. Our fixed-scope monthly website plans start at R1,000/pm and are built to rank, not just to look good. Custom projects run from R8,000 to R35,000 depending on scope, and we work with Webness, a specialist partner studio, for larger or more complex builds.
Every site we build or manage gets proper on-page SEO from day one — meta titles, descriptions, schema markup, a sitemap, and a structure that Google can crawl. If you want ongoing SEO on top of that, our Starter bundle at R10,000/pm, Growth at R20,000/pm and Scale at R30,000/pm each include website management alongside local SEO, Google Business Profile management, content and social. First month free on any of those bundles.
If you are not sure what you need, the fastest way to find out is to call or WhatsApp 079 100 5187 or email [email protected]. We will tell you honestly what tier makes sense for your business — and if a monthly plan from someone else is a better fit than a custom build from us, we will say so.
