Google Ads for Law Firms in South Africa: What a Click Costs, What to Bid On, and When Not To

Legal clicks are the most expensive local clicks in South Africa. “Divorce lawyer” costs about R71 a click. “Pretoria divorce lawyer” R86. “Best divorce lawyer in Cape Town” R131. A dentist pays R17 for “dentist near me”; a plumber pays R64. A law firm pays four to eight times that for the same intent, and it is still worth it, because a divorce, a labour matter or a personal injury claim is worth tens of thousands in fees.

It is worth it on one condition, which is the same condition as everywhere else: the enquiry gets answered. This is what to bid on, what to leave alone, how to write copy that passes paragraph 7.2.5 of the LPC Code, and how the maths works.

Three things stand out. Divorce is the expensive practice area, and Pretoria is the expensive town. The generic terms (“law firms near me”, “attorneys near me”) are cheap but broad. And “best divorce lawyer in Cape Town” costs R131 a click because firms are bidding on a phrase they are not allowed to put in their own ad.

The one condition: the enquiry is answered the same hour

What legal clicks cost in South Africa: the divorce cluster is the most expensive to buy.

The solo-practice forums this month say the same thing they said last year: money spent on ads, traffic arriving, leads arriving, consultations not happening. Every time we look at one of those accounts, the enquiry form went to an inbox that was read the next morning, or the call landed during a consultation and nobody phoned back.

Before you spend a rand at R70 a click, measure a week: enquiries in, replied inside an hour, consultations booked. If fewer than eight in ten are answered inside the hour, fix that first (a WhatsApp Business line, a reply template, a bookable consultation slot). The sequence is in how to get clients as a lawyer in South Africa.

What to bid on

Practice area plus town, exact match. “Divorce lawyer Pretoria”, “labour lawyer Vereeniging”, “conveyancing attorneys Meyerton”. This is where the money is and where the intent is clearest. Each one lands on its own practice-area page for that town, not the home page.

Labour, if you do it. “Labour lawyer” (1,600 a month at R41) and its “near me” and “employment law” variants (another 1,500) are cheaper than divorce and the matters are steady. Land on a page that answers the CCMA questions.

Conveyancing. “Conveyancing attorneys near me” is R20 a click and the searcher usually has a signed offer to purchase in hand. Land on the conveyancing page with the fee guideline and an example.

Fee searches, landed on the fee guide. “Attorney fees South Africa”, “how much does a divorce cost in South Africa”, “conveyancing attorney fees”. Under R15 a click, and the page that shows a number wins the enquiry.

Urgent matters, if you can act today. Protection orders, bail, an arrest. Small volumes, high urgency, won by whoever picks up.

What to leave alone

“Best divorce lawyer in [town]”. Paragraph 7.2.5 of the Code prohibits publicity that claims to be superior to any other practitioner, so your ad cannot say “best” and a click on that phrase from a searcher expecting “best” converts badly anyway. Let the competition pay R131 for it.

“Lawyer” and “attorney” on their own, broad match. Job seekers, students, and people in other provinces.

Practice areas you do not take. An ad for “immigration lawyer” from a firm that refers immigration out is a misrepresentation under 7.2.3 and a wasted click.

Competitor firm names. Drawing attention to yourself at another practitioner’s expense sits close to 7.2.2 and 7.2.5, and it converts poorly.

Copy that passes the LPC Code

The Code allows advertising. It prohibits publicity that misrepresents the service, that compares or criticises or claims superiority over other practitioners, that names clients without written consent, or that brings the profession into disrepute. Applied to an ad:

Passes:

Divorce Attorneys in Pretoria | First Consultation R_ Contested and uncontested divorce, maintenance, custody. Written cost estimate before we start. Book on WhatsApp.

Labour Lawyer, Vereeniging | CCMA, Unfair Dismissal, Retrenchment Consultations this week. Fixed fee for CCMA referrals. Call or WhatsApp.

Conveyancing Attorneys, Meyerton | Fee Guideline Applied Transfers and bond registrations. Example fees on our site. Book online.

Fails:

Pretoria’s Best Divorce Lawyers | We Win (7.2.5: superiority, and an implied guarantee) Cheaper Than Other Firms | Beat Any Quote (7.2.5: comparison) Represented [Client Name] in [Matter] (7.2.6: client named without consent) Don’t Let Them Take Everything | Call Now (7.2.1: the profession’s reputation; and fear-led copy converts badly)

Every passing ad states a practice area, a town, a fee policy and a way to book. None states a comparison, a promise or a client. That is the whole discipline. The reasoning behind it is in can attorneys advertise in South Africa?

Budget maths for a small firm

Say R6,000 a month on divorce and labour terms in one town at an average R55 a click. That is about 110 clicks. With a dedicated landing page and a same-hour reply, one in six to one in eight clicks becomes a consultation: 14 to 18 consultations for R6,000, or R330 to R430 each. If a third of consultations become mandates, that is five or six new matters a month for R6,000. At the fee value of a divorce or a CCMA matter, the maths is comfortable.

If the enquiries are answered the next morning and the ad lands on the home page, the same R6,000 produces four consultations and one mandate. That is the “Google Ads doesn’t work for law firms” story.

Landing pages, tracking and the calendar

One landing page per practice area per town: what you handle, the first-consultation fee, the written cost estimate promise, the attorney’s name and admission year, a short FAQ, the phone number and WhatsApp button above the fold on a phone.

Call tracking on every ad, form and WhatsApp tap, so you know which campaign produced which mandate. Without it you will cut the campaign that works.

The calendar: “law firms near me” jumps from 3,600 to 5,400 in January, and divorce enquiries follow the same January pattern. Budget up for January and February, and down for December, when the courts recess.

Ads or SEO?

Ads produce consultations this month and stop when the budget stops. The practice-area pages, the Google Business Profile and the reviews take 60 to 90 days and then keep producing at no click cost. A firm starting from nothing runs ads on its two most valuable practice areas while the pages and profile are built, then trims the spend as the organic enquiries rise. The general case is in Google Ads vs SEO for local leads.

If you’d rather we ran it

We run Google Ads for attorneys alongside the Google Business Profile package (R4,000 a month) or the Local SEO starter (R10,000 a month), with call tracking and a monthly report that shows cost per consultation, not cost per click. Every ad is written inside the Code and signed off by the firm before it runs, because paragraph 7.3 makes the responsibility yours. Month to month, no setup fee, 30 days’ notice.

Frequently asked questions
Divorce terms cost R47 to R131 a click depending on the town; labour terms R31 to R41; conveyancing about R20; generic “attorneys near me” about R19. A firm spending R6,000 a month at an average R55 gets around 110 clicks.
Yes. The Code allows advertising and regulates the content: no misrepresentation of the service (7.2.3), no comparison with or claim of superiority over other practitioners (7.2.5), no client names without written consent (7.2.6). Paying Google to show your own advert is not touting under 18.22.
Practice area plus town on exact match, landed on a page for that practice area and town. Labour and conveyancing terms are cheaper than divorce. Fee searches landed on a fee guide convert well. Avoid “best [practice] lawyer”, bare “lawyer”, practice areas you do not take, and competitor names.
Almost always because enquiries were answered the next day, the ad landed on the home page instead of a practice-area page, or broad-match keywords spent the budget on irrelevant searches. Fix response time and landing pages before restarting.
Yes. A free or fixed-fee first consultation is a statement of your fee policy, not an inducement for the referral of work, and the Code does not prohibit stating fees. State it plainly and honour it. ---
