What South Africans Search Before Choosing a Dentist: The 25 Queries Your Website Must Answer

Most dental websites in South Africa are built around what the dentist wants to say: the philosophy, the technology, the team photo. Patients are not searching for any of that. We pulled the queries South Africans actually type into Google before they book a dentist, with real monthly volumes, and mapped them to the six pages a dental website needs.

This is the brief we work from when we build or rewrite a practice site. Use it as yours. Data is Ubersuggest, South Africa, September 2026; SD is SEO difficulty out of 100, where anything under 20 is winnable for a well-set-up local site.

The headline number

“Dentist near me” is searched about 74,000 times a month in South Africa. It peaks in January (90,500) and dips in the middle of the year (60,500). That single query outweighs everything else on this page put together, and it is won on Google Maps, not on your website. Your Business Profile does that job; Google Business Profile for dentists covers it.

The website’s job is everything the map cannot answer. That is the other 24 queries.

Group 1: Price (the second-biggest intent in dentistry)

QueryMonthly searches (SA)SD
cheap dentist near me prices4,4008
braces cost south africa3,6007
dentist near me prices1,6008
dentist near me cheap1,60030
dental implants cost1,3007
dentist near me cheapest1,30012
dental implants cost south africa1,0007
teeth whitening price88010
how much is teeth whitening south africa39025
veneers cost south africa2608
dentures cost south africa2608
wisdom teeth removal cost south africa21011
dentist near me payment plan21021

More than 17,000 searches a month, almost all with an SD under 15. Nobody in South Africa is answering them properly, because most practices are afraid a fees page will make them look cheap or break an HPCSA rule. It does neither. Publishing fees is information; the HPCSA prohibits enticement, not transparency (see can dentists advertise in South Africa?).

Page it needs: a fees page with a from-price or range for every routine treatment, plus a short paragraph on payment plans if you offer them. Then one cost article per big-ticket treatment: implants, braces, whitening, veneers, dentures, wisdom teeth.

The word “cheap” is worth a note. The people typing it are not looking for the cheapest dentist in the country. They are looking for a dentist whose prices they can see before they book. A clear fees page wins the “cheap” searches without the word appearing anywhere on your site.

Group 2: Medical aid (the cluster no dental site is built around)

QueryMonthly searches (SA)SD
discovery network dentist near me26011
keycare plus dentist near me17011
gems network dentist near me14011
momentum dentist near me14011
medicross dentist near me14016
flexicare dentist near me14021
affinity health dentist near me2011

Just under 1,000 a month, every one of them a patient with cover who is ready to book. Search any of these in a South African town and you get scheme directories and aggregators, not practices, because practices do not name their networks on a crawlable page.

Page it needs: a “medical aids we work with” page. Each scheme by name, whether you are a network provider, whether you charge scheme rates, whether you claim directly, and what a co-payment looks like. Then repeat the scheme names in your Business Profile description.

Group 3: Availability

QueryMonthly searches (SA)SD
dentist near me open on weekend5907
walk in dentist near me39017
dentist near me open3207
dentist near me open saturday2608
emergency dentist [town] (e.g. Meyerton 40, Jeffreys Bay 40, Plettenberg Bay 40)30 to 40 per town7 to 23

Page it needs: an emergency and after-hours page that says, in plain words, what you do on a Saturday, what you do at 22:00, whether you take walk-ins, and what an emergency appointment costs. Then make the Business Profile hours match, to the minute.

Note that “emergency dentist” on its own returns no measurable SA volume; it only appears with a town attached. That means the emergency page has to name your town and the towns around it.

Group 4: Treatment

QueryMonthly searches (SA)SD
teeth whitening in cape town1,0008
dentist near me for kids8807
teeth whitening in johannesburg48012
pediatric dentist near me3906
dentist for teeth whitening3908
teeth whitening pretoria3906
teeth whitening durban3206
cosmetic dentist near me21024
children dentist near me21017

A warning about whitening. “Teeth whitening” on its own gets 8,100 searches a month in South Africa, but most of that is people looking for strips and toothpaste at Dis-Chem. The dental version of the search is “teeth whitening [city]” and “dentist for teeth whitening”, which is what the table shows. Target those. Do not chase the head term.

Pages it needs: one page per treatment you actually offer, each answering four things: what it is, who it is for, what it costs, how to book. Children’s dentistry gets its own page; “dentist near me for kids” plus “pediatric dentist near me” plus “children dentist near me” is nearly 1,500 searches a month and the SD is single digits.

Group 5: Location

QueryMonthly searches (SA)SD
dentist near me74,00017
nearest dentist near me48019
dentist near me [suburb] (e.g. Midrand 40, Randburg 30, Boksburg 30, Soweto 30)20 to 40 per suburb17 to 28

Page it needs: the Business Profile does the heavy lifting. On the site, one page per suburb you draw from, if you draw from more than one, each with directions, parking, the nearest landmark and the medical aids repeated. Not a copy-paste of the home page with the suburb name swapped; Google ignores those.

What the data says, in four lines

Location is decided on the map, not the website. Price is the second-biggest intent and almost nobody answers it. Medical-aid searches are a ready-to-book cluster that no SA dental site targets. And “best dentist” is a rounding error: “dentist near me best” gets 480 searches against 17,000 for price.

The six pages, in build order

  1. Fees page. Wins the price cluster.
  2. Medical aids page. Wins the network cluster.
  3. Emergency and hours page. Wins the availability cluster and protects your reviews.
  4. Children’s dentistry page. Nearly 1,500 searches a month, single-digit difficulty.
  5. Treatment pages (implants, whitening, braces, veneers, dentures, wisdom teeth), each with a cost section.
  6. Cost articles for the big-ticket searches, dated and updated every year.

Everything on those pages is information: what, where, when, how much, which schemes. None of it claims to be better than the practice down the road, which keeps it inside HPCSA Rule 3 and, as it happens, is also what patients want to read. The playbook that goes with this is in how to get more patients for your dental practice in South Africa.

Frequently asked questions
In order of volume: location (“dentist near me”, 74,000 a month), price (“cheap dentist near me prices”, “braces cost south africa”, “dental implants cost south africa”, together over 17,000), medical aid networks (Discovery, KeyCare, GEMS, Momentum, Medicross, Flexicare, together about 1,000), availability (weekend, Saturday, walk-in, emergency plus town) and specific treatments (whitening plus city, children’s dentistry, cosmetic).
Yes. Price queries are the second-biggest search intent in South African dentistry and have low SEO difficulty. Publishing fees is information, which HPCSA rules allow; promotions and discounts are touting, which they do not.
A fees page, a medical aids page, an emergency and hours page, a children’s dentistry page, one page per treatment with a cost section, and cost articles for big-ticket treatments. The Google Business Profile handles “dentist near me”.
Not the head term. “Teeth whitening” (8,100 a month) is mostly product searches. Dentists should target “teeth whitening [city]”, “dentist for teeth whitening” and “teeth whitening price”, which are patient searches with single-digit difficulty.
January. “Dentist near me” rises to about 90,500 searches in January against a 74,000 monthly average, and dips to around 60,500 mid-year. Website and profile work should be finished by November.
