Why Your Website Isn’t Ranking on Google (The 7 Most Common Reasons)
You built a website, told Google about it, and... nothing. Meanwhile a competitor with an uglier site sits at #1. After auditing dozens of Gauteng business sites, these are the seven reasons that come up again and again — in rough order of how often we find them.

1. Your page doesn't match what people actually search
The most common problem, and the least technical. Your homepage says "Welcome to our website" when customers search "emergency plumber Midvaal". Google ranks pages that clearly answer a specific query.
Check: search your main service plus your town in an incognito window. Does any page on your site say those words, plainly, in its title and headings? Fix: rewrite titles and H1s around real customer language — one clear topic per page.
2. Google can't properly read or index your site
Pages accidentally marked noindex, a robots.txt blocking crawlers, content hidden in JavaScript that never renders, or no sitemap. More common on DIY and older sites than you’d think.
Check: search site:yourdomain.co.za on Google. Missing pages? Look in Google Search Console’s Pages report for the exact reason. Fix: remove stray noindex tags, fix robots.txt, submit a clean sitemap.
3. Thin content with nothing to rank
A services page with three sentences gives Google nothing to work with. Pages that rank typically answer the query completely — what you do, where, how it works, what it costs, common questions.
Check: compare your page against whoever ranks #1 for your keyword. Be honest about the depth gap. Fix: build proper service pages — 800+ words of genuinely useful, specific content. It’s exactly why we build full service pages and location pages for clients.
4. Technical problems dragging you down
Slow load times (painful on South African mobile connections), broken mobile layout, missing HTTPS, uncompressed images. Google won’t send searchers to a bad experience.
Check: run your URL through PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile score first. Fix: compress images, enable caching, fix mobile issues, ensure HTTPS everywhere. Sites we build through our website design service have this baked in from day one.
5. No local signals
If you serve a specific area but your site never says where you are — no town names, no address, no Google Business Profile — Google can’t match you to local searches.
Check: does your site state your location on the homepage, contact page and footer? Is your Google Business Profile claimed, complete and collecting reviews? Fix: add genuine local content, set up your profile properly (our Google Business Profile guide walks through it), and keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere. This is the core of local SEO.
6. Zero authority
Google trusts sites that other sites trust. A new site with no reviews, no directory listings and no links from anywhere is invisible by default — especially against established competitors.
Check: Google your business name. Do you appear on directories, social profiles, review platforms? Fix: build citations (Google, Bing Places, Apple Maps, local directories), earn reviews steadily, and create content worth linking to. This is the slowest fix and the one cheap SEO always skips.
7. You haven't waited long enough
The least satisfying answer: SEO takes time. New sites typically need 3 to 6 months to rank for anything competitive, even with everything done right.
Check: how old is the site, and has the optimisation work actually been done? Fix: keep executing consistently. Most campaigns show early movement in 6 to 12 weeks and compound from there. Quitting at week 8 is how businesses waste the investment.
