Google Ads for Electricians in South Africa: What a Click Costs, What to Bid On, and When Not To

An emergency electrical click costs about R155 in South Africa. That is the most expensive local-service click we track, above emergency plumbers (R105) and roofing (R144), and it tells you two things at once: the searcher with no power at 21:00 is worth a lot to whoever answers, and a missed call at that price is the most expensive mistake a one-man electrical business can make.

This is what electrical clicks cost, what to bid on, what to leave alone, and how the maths works when the phone is answered and when it isn’t.

Three things to see. The one true emergency term is in a class of its own at R155. The bread-and-butter “electrician near me” is R65. And the high-value work, COC (R38), solar and inverters (R20 to R29), is cheap for what the job is worth.

The one condition: the phone is answered

A glowing violet frosted-glass bar chart of ascending bars floating in the dark
What electrical clicks cost: emergency terms are dear, COC and inverter terms are cheap.

At R155 a click, twenty emergency clicks is R3,100. If those calls land while you are on a ladder and ring out, the R3,100 bought jobs for the electrician who picked up. Every “ads don’t work” story in the trade is a phone that rang out.

Before you spend, measure a week: calls in, calls answered, jobs booked. If you answer fewer than eight in ten, set up WhatsApp Business with a missed-call auto-reply and a quick-quote price list, then run ads. The full order of operations is in how to get clients as an electrician in South Africa.

What to bid on

COC, with a town. “Electrical COC certificate [town]”, “certificate of compliance electrician [town]”. R38 a click, 390 searches a month nationally, every property sale needs one, and the searcher already knows what they want. Land on a COC page with the price, the turnaround, and your Department registration number. That number is the thing buyers are told to verify, explained in how to check if an electrician is registered.

Inverters and solar, with a town. “Inverter installation [town]” (R20 to R29), “solar installer [town]” (R27). High-ticket jobs, cheap clicks, and a registered electrician who issues the COC on the installation has a real advantage over the solar sales companies. Land on a solar page with from-prices and the COC line.

Emergency, in a tight radius, only during hours you answer. “Emergency electrician [town]”, “24 hour electrician [town]”, “no power electrician [town]”. R155 is fine for a job you will attend within the hour; it is theft if the phone is off. Schedule the ads for the hours you actually answer.

“Electrician [town]” exact match. The volume term, R65, landed on a town page that shows the registration number, the call-out fee and the services. Never broad match.

Price searches, landed on the price page. “Electrician call out fee” (R17), “electrician near me price” (R15). Cheap clicks from people comparing; the page with a number wins.

What to leave alone

Anything with “car”, “auto”, “vehicle” or a car brand. “Car electrician near me” gets 8,100 searches a month, the same as “electrician near me”, plus “auto electrician near me” variants for every brand from BMW to Nissan. Unless you are an auto electrician, add every one of those as a negative keyword on day one. This is the single biggest budget leak in electrical Google Ads.

“Electrician” broad match. Job seekers, learnerships, salary searches (“how much do electricians earn”), students.

“Electrical engineer” and “electrical engineering”. A different profession and a flood of study-related searches.

“Cheap electrician near me” as a target. Answer it with a visible price list, not a bid.

Solar terms if you don’t hold the registration to issue the COC on the installation. An inverter install is electrical installation work; advertising it without a registered person is a wasted click and a regulatory problem.

Ad copy that gets the call

Electricians have no advertising code to comply with, but the copy that converts is the copy a regulated profession would write anyway: service, area, registration, price, response time. No superlatives.

Works:

Emergency Electrician Vereeniging | On Site Within the Hour No power, tripping DB, burning smell. Registered contractor. Call-out R_. Call or WhatsApp now.

Electrical COC Certificate, Meyerton | From R_, 48-Hour Turnaround Registered installation electrician. Dept of Labour reg. no. [xxxx]. Book on WhatsApp.

Inverter and Solar Installation, Sasolburg | COC Included From R_. Registered electrician on every install. Same-day quote.

Wastes money:

Best Electricians in Gauteng | Cheapest Rates Guaranteed (no town, no price, no registration, and “best” and “guaranteed” read as a warning) Electrical Services | Contact Us (nothing to click for)

Budget maths for a one-bakkie business

Say R3,000 a month: R1,200 on COC and inverter terms (R30 a click, 40 clicks) and R1,800 on “electrician [town]” and emergency terms in office hours (R75 average, 24 clicks). With an answered phone and a price list, COC and solar clicks convert one in five (8 jobs) and the emergency and town clicks one in three (8 jobs). Sixteen jobs for R3,000, under R200 a job, and several of them are COCs or inverters worth many times that.

The same R3,000 with calls ringing out on a roof: five jobs. That is the story people tell about electrical Google Ads, and it is a phone story, not an ads story.

Landing pages, tracking and the calendar

One landing page per campaign: emergency (phone number huge, “within the hour”, registration number, call-out fee), COC (price, turnaround, what is inspected, registration), solar and inverter (from-prices, COC, brands you install), price guide, and a town page for the volume term. Phone number and WhatsApp button visible without scrolling on a phone.

Call tracking on every ad and a WhatsApp click tracker, so you know which campaign produced which job.

The calendar: COC searches follow property sales and are steady; solar and inverter searches jump whenever load-shedding returns to the news; emergency searches spike with storms. Budget up when the lights go out.

Google’s Local Services Ads (“Google Guaranteed”) is not offered in South Africa at the time of writing. Standard Search ads are the tool.

Ads or the profile?

Ads produce calls this week and stop when the budget stops. The Business Profile, reviews and service pages take 60 to 90 days and then keep producing at no click cost. A new electrical business runs ads on COC and inverter terms while the profile and pages get built, then trims spend as organic calls rise. The general case is in Google Ads vs SEO for local leads; the profile setup is in Google Business Profile for electricians.

If you’d rather we ran it

We run Google Ads for trades alongside the Google Business Profile package (R4,000 a month) or the Local SEO starter (R10,000 a month), with call tracking, the auto-electrician negative list built in, and a monthly report that shows cost per booked job. Month to month, no setup fee, 30 days’ notice.

WhatsApp or call 079 100 5187, or use the website audit tool. Details on the Google Ads service page; the trades playbook is on the marketing for plumbers page and is identical for electricians.

Frequently asked questions
“Electrician near me emergency” is about R155 a click, “electrician near me” about R65, “electrical COC certificate” about R38, solar and inverter terms R20 to R29, and “electrician call out fee” about R17. A one-bakkie business spending R3,000 a month gets roughly 60 to 65 clicks across COC, solar, town and emergency terms.
COC terms with a town, inverter and solar terms with a town, “electrician [town]” on exact match, emergency terms only during hours you answer, and price searches landed on a price page. Add “car”, “auto”, “vehicle” and car brands as negative keywords on day one.
Usually one of three things: calls rang out while you were on a job, the budget leaked to “car electrician” and “auto electrician” searches, or the ad landed on a home page with no price, registration number or phone number above the fold.
On exact and phrase match with your town, yes, at about R65 a click, landed on a town page. Never on broad match, which spends on job seekers, students and other provinces.
Not at the time of writing. South African electricians use standard Google Search ads with call tracking. ---
