Google Business Profile for Electricians: The Setup That Wins “Electrician Near Me” in South Africa

“Electrician near me” is searched about 8,100 times a month in South Africa. “Electrical COC certificate” 390. The emergency versions (“electrician near me emergency”, “24 hour electrician near me”, “electrician near me 24/7”) about 420 between them. “Solar installer near me” 480. Almost every one of those searches ends on the map, and the map is decided by your Google Business Profile.

This is the electrician-specific setup. The general South African guide is here; this article assumes the profile is claimed and verified and covers what an electrical contractor does differently.

1. The name on the profile is the name on the registration letter

Your Department of Employment and Labour contractor registration is in a business name. Use that name. “Vaal Electrical Services”, not “Vaal Electrical Services | COC Electrician Vereeniging 24/7 Solar”. Keyword-stuffed names get suspended, and a suspended profile is invisible for weeks.

2. Primary category Electrician, and watch the auto-electrician trap

Electrician near me is a map-pack search. This is the setup that puts you in the three.

Primary category: Electrician. Google also has “Auto electrical service” and “Electrical installation service”; the first one is a different trade and the second is weaker than the primary. “Car electrician near me” gets 8,100 searches a month in South Africa, the same as “electrician near me”, and Google will happily show a house electrician for car searches if the category is loose. Keep it tight.

Additional categories only for work you actually do: Solar energy contractor (only if you install solar and inverters), Electrical installation service, Lighting contractor, Electrical engineer only if there is one. No Plumber unless there is one.

3. Services, named the way customers search, with from-prices

Google lets you list services with a price on each. The customer searching “electrician call out fee” (110 a month) or “electrical COC certificate” (390) wants the number, and the profile that shows it gets the call.

List them as: Call-out and first hour (R_), Certificate of Compliance (COC) inspection and certificate (from R_), DB board repairs and upgrades (from R_), Fault finding and tripping power (from R_), Inverter and solar installation (from R_), Prepaid meter installation (from R_), Geyser element and thermostat (from R_), New wiring and rewires (per point R_), Emergency call-out (R_). One factual line under each.

The COC line matters most. Every property sale in the country needs one, and “electrical COC certificate” is the second-biggest electrical search after “near me”.

4. The description: registration number first

750 characters. Lead with the thing customers are told to check.

[Business] is a registered electrical contractor (Dept of Employment and Labour reg. no. [xxxx]) serving [town] and the [area]. Registered installation electrician on every job. Certificates of Compliance, DB board repairs, fault finding, inverter and solar installations with COC, prepaid meters and emergency call-outs. Call-out fee R_. Same-day quotes on WhatsApp.

Under the Electrical Installation Regulations, no one may do electrical installation work as a contractor unless registered with the Department (regulation 6(1)), and only a registered person may issue a COC (regulation 9(1)). The Department has publicly warned homeowners to verify a contractor’s registration letter before paying. The number in the description is the answer to that warning. The full explainer is in how to check if an electrician is registered in South Africa.

5. Service areas, not a home address

Most electricians work from home. Hide the address and list the towns and suburbs you cover as service areas. Google allows it, it keeps your family’s address off the internet, and you appear for searches in every town you list.

6. Hours: 24/7 only if you answer at 02:00

The emergency cluster (“electrician near me emergency”, “24 hour electrician near me”, “electrician near me 24/7”, “electrician near me open now”) is about 500 searches a month and the most expensive clicks in the trade. Google filters by hours. Claim 24/7 only if the phone is answered at 02:00; otherwise set honest hours and say “after-hours call-outs by arrangement” in the description.

7. Photos: DB boards, COCs, the bakkie, the team

Before-and-after DB board photos are the most convincing image an electrician can post. Add the completed COC with the customer’s details covered, an inverter install, the bakkie with branding, the team in PPE. A photo of the registration letter with your ID number covered is a strong trust image. A few new photos every month.

8. Reviews after every COC

The COC handover is the moment to ask. Send the review link by WhatsApp the same day with the customer’s name and suburb. Never offer anything for it. Reply to every review in one sentence, including the bad ones. A steady two or three a week beats a burst of thirty.

9. Q&A: the questions your phone rings with

Post and answer: Are you registered with the Department of Labour? Do you issue COCs, and what does one cost? Do you install inverters and solar? Do you do emergencies after hours? What is your call-out fee? Do you do prepaid meters? Which areas do you cover? Do you charge per point for new wiring?

10. Posts weekly: jobs and tips, not offers

A DB board rebuild with a line on what was wrong. An inverter install with the COC mentioned. A tip: “if your earth leakage keeps tripping, unplug everything and reset; if it still trips, don’t force it, call us”. Load-shedding and outage notes for your area. No “20% off”. Nobody with a tripping DB is waiting for a special.

11. Messaging and the missed-call reply

Route messaging to a WhatsApp Business number and set a missed-call auto-reply so every call that rings out while you are on a roof gets a text within a minute. The profile produces the enquiry; the reply time decides the job. The full sequence is in how to get clients as an electrician in South Africa.

12. Solar and inverter work gets its own service and its own reviews

“Solar installer near me” (480), “solar and inverter installation” (210), “inverter installation” (170), “inverter installation near me” (110). Google treats these as separate from “electrician near me”. If you do this work, list it as a service, add the Solar energy contractor category, post the installs, and ask solar customers to mention the word “inverter” in their review.

13. Citations and the registration list

Same name, number and service area on Snupit, Yellow Pages, Brabys, the ECA(SA) member directory if you are a member, and the local Facebook business pages. Our local citation sources for South Africa post has the list.

14. Track calls against jobs

Monthly, compare calls and messages received to jobs booked. If calls rise and jobs do not, the problem is answering and quoting, not the profile. When the profile is doing its job and you want more volume, Google Ads for electricians is the paid lever that runs on the same searches.

What gets electrical profiles suspended or ignored

Keyword-stuffed names. A shown home address with no signage. The Auto electrical category on a house electrician (or the reverse). Categories you cannot back. Incentivised reviews. Duplicate profiles. Stock photos. 24/7 claims with a phone that rings out.

If you’d rather we ran it

Google Business Profile management for trades is R4,000 a month: profile rebuild, weekly posts, review management and replies, citations, photos, monthly report. Month to month, no setup fee, 30 days’ notice. If you have no website, the five-page site with hosting is R1,000 a month.

Frequently asked questions
“Electrician” as the primary category. Add Solar energy contractor only if you install solar and inverters. Avoid “Auto electrical service” unless you are one; “car electrician near me” gets as many searches as “electrician near me” and a loose category attracts the wrong calls.
Yes, in the description. The Electrical Installation Regulations require contractor registration with the Department of Employment and Labour (regulation 6(1)), and the Department has told the public to verify it. The number on the profile answers the question before the customer asks.
Yes. List the call-out fee, COC from-price, fault-finding from-price and per-point rate. “Electrician call out fee” and “electrical COC certificate” are real searches; the profile that shows a number gets the call.
Only if the phone is answered at 02:00. Emergency electrical clicks cost around R155; a 24/7 claim with a phone that rings out costs the job and earns a one-star review.
Ask at the COC handover, by WhatsApp, the same day, without offering anything. Reply to every review. Aim for a steady few a week. ---
