Google Ads for Plumbers in South Africa: What a Click Costs, What to Bid On, and When Not To

Google Ads works for plumbers for one reason: the person searching has water on the floor right now. It fails for plumbers for one reason too: the person searching phones, gets voicemail, and phones the next one. Everything in this article sits between those two facts.

Two things to see. The emergency and drain terms are the expensive ones, R55 to R105, because that searcher will book in the next ten minutes. And the geyser terms, which are the highest-value jobs, are cheap: “gas geyser installation” is 1,900 searches a month at R17 a click.

The one condition: the phone is answered

What plumbing clicks cost in South Africa: emergency and blocked-drain terms sit highest, installation terms lowest.

A plumbing business owner ran a poll in a trade forum this month asking where jobs come from. The comments were more useful than the votes: “ads getting clicks but no conversions”, “missed the call while I was under a house”. At R105 a click, twenty missed calls is R2,100 that went to the plumber who picked up.

Before you spend, measure a week: calls in, calls answered, jobs quoted, jobs booked. If you answer fewer than eight in ten, set up a missed-call auto-reply on WhatsApp Business, a price list you can quote from in ten minutes, and a follow-up rule. Then run ads. The four leaks are in how to get more plumbing customers in South Africa.

What to bid on

Emergency, in a tight radius, only during hours you answer. “Emergency plumber [town]”, “24 hour plumber [town]”, “burst pipe [town]”. Schedule the ads for the hours the phone is actually manned. If you do not answer at 02:00, do not pay for 02:00 clicks.

Geysers, all three kinds. “Geyser installation [town]” (R27), “gas geyser installation [town]” (R17), “solar geyser installation [town]” (R22), “geyser replacement [town]”. High-value jobs, cheap clicks, and the customer usually needs it done this week. Land on a geyser page with the from-price, the CoC, and, for gas, your SAQCC Gas registration.

Blocked drains, with a town. R55 to R82 a click, urgent, and the job is same-day. Land on the drains page with the jetting photo and the from-price.

Price searches, landed on the price guide. “Plumber call out fee” (R35), “plumber near me prices” (R38), “geyser installation cost” (R11). Cheap clicks from people comparing; the page that shows the number wins.

What to leave alone

“Plumber near me” broad match. It will spend R64 a click on people in other provinces and on job seekers. Use exact and phrase match with your towns.

“Plumbing” on its own, and anything to do with courses, jobs, suppliers or “plumbing per point” as a pricing question from other plumbers.

“Cheap plumber near me” as a bid target, unless you actually are the cheapest. It is a 320-a-month search at R52, and the searcher will phone three quotes. Answer it with a visible price list instead.

Gas terms without SAQCC Gas registration. Under the Pressure Equipment Regulations only an authorised person may install a gas appliance; an ad for work you cannot lawfully do is a wasted click and worse.

Ad copy that gets the call

Plumbers do not have a regulator’s advertising code the way attorneys and dentists do, but the same copy discipline converts better anyway: state the service, the area, the registration, the price, the response time. Skip the superlatives.

Works:

Emergency Plumber Vereeniging | On Site Within the Hour Burst pipes, geysers, blocked drains. PIRB registered. Call-out R_. Call or WhatsApp now.

Gas Geyser Installation, Meyerton | SAQCC Gas Registered Supply and install from R_, CoC issued. Quote on WhatsApp within the hour.

Blocked Drains Sasolburg | Jetting and Camera Inspection Same-day. From R_. Registered plumber. Call now.

Wastes money:

Best Plumbers in Gauteng | Cheapest Rates Guaranteed (no area, no price, no registration, and “best” and “guaranteed” make people suspicious) Plumbing Services | Contact Us for a Quote (no reason to click this over the next one)

Budget maths for a one-bakkie business

Say R3,000 a month, split across emergency terms in office hours (R90 a click) and geyser terms (R20 a click). Roughly 15 emergency clicks and 80 geyser clicks. With a phone that is answered and a price list to quote from, emergency clicks convert one in three and geyser clicks one in eight: about five emergency jobs and ten geyser quotes, of which perhaps five book. Ten jobs for R3,000, or R300 a job, on work that averages well above that.

Same R3,000 with calls going to voicemail while you are under a house: three jobs. That is the “ads don’t work for plumbers” story.

Landing pages, tracking and the calendar

One landing page per campaign: emergency (phone number huge, “on site within the hour”, registration, call-out fee), geysers (three types, from-prices, CoC), drains (jetting, camera, from-price), price guide. The WhatsApp button and phone number visible without scrolling on a phone.

Call tracking numbers on every ad, and a WhatsApp click tracker, so you know which campaign produced which job. Without it you cut the campaign that works.

The calendar: geyser searches climb in winter (May to August) when elements fail and pressure valves go; blocked drains spike after the first summer storms. Budget up for those and down for the quiet months.

Google’s Local Services Ads (“Google Guaranteed”), which US and UK plumbers use, is not offered in South Africa at the time of writing. Standard Search ads are the tool.

Ads or the profile?

Ads produce calls this week and stop when the budget stops. The Business Profile, the reviews and the service pages take 60 to 90 days and then keep producing at no click cost. A new plumbing business runs ads on emergency and geyser terms while the profile and pages get built, then trims spend as the organic calls rise. The general case is in Google Ads vs SEO for local leads, and the profile setup is in Google Business Profile for plumbers.

If you’d rather we ran it

We run Google Ads for plumbers alongside the Google Business Profile package (R4,000 a month) or the Local SEO starter (R10,000 a month), with call tracking and a monthly report that shows cost per booked job, not cost per click. Month to month, no setup fee, 30 days’ notice.

Frequently asked questions
Emergency and blocked-drain clicks cost R55 to R105; “plumber near me” about R64; geyser installation terms R11 to R27, with “gas geyser installation” at about R17. A one-bakkie business spending R3,000 a month gets roughly 15 emergency clicks and 80 geyser clicks.
Emergency terms with a town, scheduled only for hours you answer; geyser installation, gas geyser and solar geyser terms with a town; blocked drain terms with a town; and price searches landed on a price guide. Avoid broad-match “plumber near me”, “cheap plumber”, and gas terms without SAQCC Gas registration.
Usually calls went to voicemail while you were on a job, the ad landed on a home page with no price or phone number above the fold, or broad-match keywords spent the budget on irrelevant searches. Fix answering and landing pages before restarting.
Only if someone answers at night. Emergency clicks cost around R100; a 02:00 click that rings out is R100 to a competitor. Schedule ads for the hours the phone is manned.
Not at the time of writing. Local Services Ads is available in the US, Canada, the UK and parts of Europe. South African plumbers use standard Google Search ads. ---
