Google Business Profile for Plumbers: The Setup That Wins “Plumber Near Me” in South Africa

A geyser bursts in Vereeniging at 21:00. Nobody scrolls to page two. They search “plumber near me”, which happens about 14,800 times a month in South Africa, and phone one of the three businesses Google shows on the map. Your Google Business Profile is what decides whether you are one of the three. For a plumber it is worth more than the website, the bakkie branding and the flyers combined.

This is the plumbing-specific setup. The general South African guide is here; this article assumes you have claimed and verified the profile and covers what a plumber does differently.

1. The name on the profile is the name on the bakkie

“Vaal Plumbing Solutions”. Not “Vaal Plumbing Solutions | 24/7 Emergency Plumber Vereeniging Geysers Drains”. Google suspends keyword-stuffed names, and the suspension takes weeks to appeal while your competitors take the calls.

2. Primary category Plumber, and only the extras you’re registered for

The map pack shows three businesses. The profile setup below decides whether yours is one of them.

Primary category: Plumber. Additional categories only for work you actually do and are registered to do: Drainage service, Gas installation service (only if you hold SAQCC Gas registration), Solar hot water system supplier (only if you install solar geysers), Water heater installation and repair service. Do not add Electrician unless a registered electrician works for you.

The primary category is one of the heaviest ranking signals in local search. Choosing “Plumbing supply store” or “Contractor” because it sounded broader is the most common mistake we fix.

3. Services, named the way customers search, with from-prices

Google lets you list services and put a price on each. Customers searching “plumber call out fee” (140 a month), “plumber near me prices” (140), “geyser installation cost” (170) and “geyser replacement cost” (70) are looking for exactly this, and the profile that shows a number gets the call.

List them as: Call-out and first hour (R_), Geyser replacement and installation (from R_), Gas geyser installation (from R_), Solar geyser installation (from R_), Blocked drains and jetting (from R_), Burst pipes and leak detection (from R_), Toilet and tap repairs (from R_), Bathroom plumbing per point (R_ per point), Emergency call-out (R_). One plain line under each. No “best”, “cheapest”, “gentle” or “guaranteed”.

“Gas geyser installation” is searched 1,900 times a month in South Africa, more than “geyser installation” itself. If you are SAQCC Gas registered, it is your most valuable service line.

4. The description: registration, services, area, call-out fee

750 characters. Spend them on what a customer with water on the floor wants to know.

[Business] is a PIRB-registered plumbing company serving [town] and the [area]. Licensed Plumber no. [xxxx]; SAQCC Gas registered for gas geyser installations. Geyser replacements with CoC, gas and solar geysers, blocked drains and jetting, burst pipes, leak detection and bathroom plumbing. Call-out fee R_. Quotes on WhatsApp within the hour. 24-hour emergency line.

“Do plumbers have to be registered in South Africa?” and “how to check if a plumber is registered” are among Google’s own related questions for plumbing searches. Customers are checking. The registration numbers in the description answer them before they ask.

5. Service areas, not a home address

If you run the business from home, hide the address and list the suburbs and towns you cover as service areas. Google allows it for service-area businesses, it keeps your family’s address off the internet, and it lets you appear for searches in every town you list. If you have a yard or a shop, show the address; customers searching “plumbing shop near me” want to find it.

6. Hours: 24/7 only if the phone is answered at 02:00

“Plumber near me emergency” (480 a month), “emergency plumber near me” (390), “24 hours plumber near me” (210), “plumber near me open now” (210). Google filters these by hours. If you claim 24/7 and the call rings out at 02:00, you earn the one-star review that sits at the top of your profile for a year. If you do answer, claim it and say so in the description.

Set real hours, set special hours for public holidays, and use “more hours” for emergency cover if it differs from the office hours.

7. Photos of real work

The geyser install with the drip tray, vacuum breaker and pressure valve visible. The jetting machine on a blocked drain. A before-and-after of a bathroom re-plumb. The bakkie with branding. The team in uniform. Upload a few every month; a profile with photos from 2021 tells Google and the customer that nothing has happened since.

Blur customer house numbers and faces. A COC with the customer’s details blacked out is a strong trust photo.

8. Reviews: ask when the water is running again

Send the review link by WhatsApp the moment the job is done, with the customer’s name and suburb in the message. Ask, do not reward; an incentive breaks Google’s review policy and gets the reviews removed. Reply to every review in one calm sentence, including the bad ones: “Sorry to hear this. Please call [number] so we can put it right.” A steady flow of two or three a week beats a burst of thirty.

9. Q&A: answer the questions you get on the phone

Post and answer: What is your call-out fee? Do you do emergencies after hours? Are you PIRB registered? Do you issue a CoC on geysers? Do you install gas geysers? Do you work with insurance claims? Do you charge per point? Which areas do you cover? Do you do blocked drains?

10. Posts weekly, jobs not offers

A post a week: a geyser install with the CoC mentioned, a drain cleared, a tip (“what to do when your geyser bursts: turn off the water at the mains and the geyser’s isolator”), a holiday-hours notice. Photos of real work. No “20% off this week”; customers with a burst pipe are not waiting for a special, and Google does not rank them.

11. Messaging to a WhatsApp that someone watches

Turn on messaging and route it to the WhatsApp Business number. Set the missed-call auto-reply so every call that rings out gets a text within a minute. The profile will produce the enquiry; whether it becomes a job depends on the reply time. The four places plumbing leads leak are in how to get more plumbing customers in South Africa.

12. Citations: same name, number and area everywhere

Snupit, Yellow Pages, Brabys, the PIRB and IOPSA “find a plumber” listings, the local Facebook business directory, the insurers’ approved-contractor lists if you are on them. Same name, same number, same service area. Our local citation sources for South Africa post has the full list.

13. Track calls against jobs

The profile reports calls, direction requests and website clicks. Once a month, compare calls received to jobs booked. If calls are up and jobs are not, the leak is in the answering and quoting, not the profile. Once the profile is steady and the phone is answered, Google Ads for plumbers is the next lever when you want more volume than the map alone brings in.

What gets plumbing profiles suspended or ignored

Keyword-stuffed names. A home address shown with no signage (Google may ask for a video verification). Categories you cannot back. Incentivised reviews. Duplicate profiles for the same business under two names. Stock photos of a spanner. 24/7 claims with a phone that rings out.

No. Hide the address and list the suburbs and towns you serve as service areas. Google allows this for service-area businesses and it keeps your home address private.
Yes. Google allows a price on each service. Listing your call-out fee, geyser replacement from-price and per-point rate answers the price searches (“plumber call out fee”, “geyser installation cost”) before the customer phones.
Only if the phone is answered at 02:00. Emergency searches are filtered by hours; a 24/7 claim with a phone that rings out produces one-star reviews.
Send the review link by WhatsApp the moment the job is done, ask without offering anything in return, and reply to every review. A steady two or three a week is better than a one-off push. ---
